What are Big Ideas?

Big Ideas are the big picture thoughts that help us make sense of our learning.

They’re the ideas that pop up in lots of different subjects — like change, identity, power, innovation, or sustainability.

When we learn through a Big Idea, we’re not just doing English or Science or HASS — we’re exploring how all our learning connects together, just like pieces of a puzzle. It’s the difference between learning about things and learning through ideas that matter.

 

Why do we use Big Ideas?

Because the world isn’t split into subjects — it’s all connected!

 

Big Ideas help us:

· See connections between what we learn in different lessons.

· Think more deeply instead of just remembering facts.

· Ask better questions and follow our curiosity.

· Understand the world and how it works.

· Use our learning in real-life situations.

When we learn through Big Ideas, we start to notice patterns, make links, and think in bigger, more powerful ways.

 

How do we learn through Big Ideas?

We start with a question or a theme that makes us wonder — something like:

“Action equals change”

“Everyone’s history is unique”

“Power Moves: Innovate, Influence, Impact!”

Then we explore it across different subjects.

For example, if our Big Idea is Change:

· In Science, we might explore how materials or environments change.

· In HASS, we might look at how communities change over time.

· In English, we might read stories about characters who grow or transform.

· In Art, we might show change through colours, movement, or design.

Everything links back to that Big Idea — and by the end, we understand it in lots of different ways.
